Leave early in the morning after breakfast for an almost day long drive up the Alaknanda valley to Pipalkoti or Govindghat, passing the river confluences at Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandprayag along the way. The run can take more than 10 hours if there is traffic congestion. We prefer Govindghat or Pipalkoti over Badrinath for this night, as pilgrims booked directly into Badrinath routinely arrive late in the evening, which makes services difficult to manage and leaves the next day rushed. The Govindghat to Badrinath stretch via Lambgarh is also prone to landslides and is never advisable after dark. Staying lower allows gradual acclimatisation and leaves time to see Hemkund Sahib Ji at Govindghat or the traditional markets of Pipalkoti and Joshimath.
